There are few human beings that make me proud to be a member of the same species. The foremost among them died today.
Kurt Vonnegut is in heaven now*, and the world is a little sadder, and darker, and things make a little less sense.

A sad day, of course, but at least I'm heartened by Vonnegut's large and stunning body of writing. Celebrity seemed not to impress him, and punditry wasn't his style; he would leave the pontifications and prognostications to Mailer and Vidal. Vonnegut was a cheerful nihilist, acutely aware that our best intentions and our worst actions are simultaneous affairs, with the result being downbeat and comic.
Damn.
