Settlers Wanted

I’m looking for a few intrepid souls who are willing to try out blogging on a Wordpress platform at my new site.

I think you’ll find that you can do so much more with Wordpress that you’ll wonder why you ever used blogger in the first place.

As you can see here, you can easily upload your blogger posts and comments to the new platform. In fact, if you’re willing to share your blogger user name and password with me, I’ll do it for you.

Also included will be the comments links to the forum. I will be using this template to set up all of the blogs, but you can choose your own later on if you want.

So…who wants to be first?

Just email me at schadenfreude@dynamicfriction.com. Give me the name of your blog and the name under which you want to write. If you include your preferred password in the email, I’ll set you up with that; otherwise, I’ll email you a randomly generated password and you can change your own later.

If you want your blogger posts moved for you, then include your user name and password for blogger, and you’ll be ready to start blogging right away.

What this means:

1. I can host blogs
2. I'd like to host your blogs
3. Posts from hosted blogs only will be promoted to articles in the magazine
4. Not all posts become articles, but I'm hoping to cherry pick about one per week per blog
5. Not everybody gets a blog - it's a select group - but everybody here
(current members of Wikifray and nuponuq) gets one if they want one.
6. Hosted blogs who desire it can share in the revenue (or your blog can be non-commercial)
7. There will also be articles that don't come from blogs
8. Only items not previously published (including in an outside the network blog) will be considered for publication
9. Those who don't want their blogs hosted can still have a nuponuq forum
10. Some forum posts may become articles (with the writer's permission)
11. Launch date is early September, so you have lots of time to think about it
(no pressure and no hard feelings)
12. Pay for articles - minimal to start, but you can put it on your resume/portfolio - you'll be a published writer
13. Anybody know where to find a good crossword program?
14. I can think of nothing better than Elbo Ruum and Isonomist as Dueling Dear Abby's.
15. Not all of you will love the software. I can also host Wordpress and maybe Movable Type, but not as seamlessly.
16. I've "borrowed" some of your stuff to show you what it might look like. The look and feel still needs some polish, and I'm looking for a better RTE, but I think I'm getting there.

Lot and lots of other stuff, but that's probably enough to digest for now. I'm around to answer questions, etc.

Here's How It (Doesn't) Work

If nobody posts on the blog, then

there's nothing to discuss in the forum. If there's no posts on the blog and no discussion in the forum, then there's no Wikifray. If there's no posts on the blog, no discussion in the forum, and no Wikifray, then I may just cease to exist.

Thoughts On "Fixing the Fray"

What few people seem to realize is that nobody has any intention of fixing the Fray.

What they are talking about is creating a whole new forum, with a completely different look, different tools, different capabilities, and different ways of interacting with other Slate readers.

What they are not talking about is making the font bigger, or the page longer, or...just about anything about which people are commenting.

Sure, there will still be something called the Fray, but it won't be a threaded bulletin board.

The old Fray, the Fray we have known, loved and hated for the past seven years, will be gone. It may be accessible in an archive form, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it weren't.

So...what they really want you to talk about is:

1. I want to upload audio of me reading my own poetry.
2. I want to upload video of me and my friends acting out the Battle of Antietam with hockey sticks for guns.
3. I want every post of mine to carry a picture of my cat.
4. You get the idea.

You're failing them.

They're failing you, too. I'm guessing that Geoff or Adam wrote the survey questions, which are oddly disconnected from the actual initiative - they're administrative issues/decisions, not features for readers.

The Fray is dead.
